China v. US

The race for power is a historic rivalry that recruits all advanced countries.  This competition was evident during the ‘60s with the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, and for our generation, the tension is now seen in the relationship status of the United States and China.  Spoiler alert: it’s complicated.
However, before this situation turns into a reason for people to blindly jump on the patriotism bandwagon, let’s take a look at the facts: first of all, we can disregard the notion that China is a bloodthirsty hegemon hoping to steal the United States’ global power.  The Foreign Affairs magazine says: “the perception of China as an aggressive, expansionist power are off base.”  The Chinese government has other priorities than challenging the dominance of the U.S.--namely, “to avoid territorial losses, to reduce its neighbors’ suspicions, and to sustain economic growth”, as the magazine detailed.

Also, the website of the US-China Business Council says that there are roughly 240 American companies that are currently doing business with the Chinese, including major corporations such as Apple, Chevron, and the Walt Disney Company.  This means that the United States and China are working together as business partners, and are getting along with each other, to some extent.

That’s not to say that competition between the two countries is completely non-existent--Forbes magazine released an article in January of this year, the headline blaring: “China is 175.6% Dependent on the U.S.”.  This percentage comes from an analysis of China’s trade surplus in 2011, leading Forbes to conclude that: “175.6% of China’s overall trade surplus last year related to sales to the United States”.  In case you failed to notice the “made in China” stickers on just about everything in Walmart, the Forbes statistic provides further proof that China is deeply involved in trade with the U.S.

3 Ridiculous Arguments Contributing to the Whole "Gay is Evil" Thing

One of the hugest topics of controversy, love, and hate that has been flung around a lot is the topic of homosexuality.  I'm sure you've heard of it.  I've heard a lot from both sides on this topic, and this is the critique I have to offer against the arguments of those you might classify as homophobes...

1: The Bible Says That Homophobia is Evil
Yes, there are passages in the Bible that seem to regard homosexuality in a less than positive manner.  But the Bible also regards tons of other little things as unholy or sinful, and no one seems to pay much attention to those topics!  These include random, casual tasks such as wearing expensive clothes, cutting your hair, or wearing wool and linen together.  I am fairly sure that there are some religious, Bible reading folks that have done one or more of these things, and I don't see anyone lined up protesting their way of life.

So why is it that homosexuality seems to be one of the few things that has survived the discrimination of hundreds of years?  The fact is that unless you can honestly say you have never cut your hair, you meticulously sort linens from wool, and you very strictly adhere to absolutely every law proclaimed in the Bible, it does not make sense to use the Bible as your reason for hatin' on gay people.  For all you people who typically partake in haircuts and wear expensive suits, just cut it out.  You aren't helping your case very much.
Unless you're classy... like Neil Patrick Harris.
2: Homosexuality Isn't Natural
Flashback to freshman year, biology class.  We were watching a crusty scientific video, a feature on porn.  No joke.  An entire classroom of freshmen students subjected to footage of primates getting it on like-- well... crazy monkeys.  It was scary.  But, it also was very educational!

For you see, scientific observations have found much naturally occurring homosexual behavior amongst primates (who, I might add, happen to be quite closely related to humans).  If you don't quite trust me, read the National Geographic.  Or hit up YouTube for some same-sex animal porn!
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/07/0722_040722_gayanimal.html

3: Same-Sex Marriage Will Ruin the Sanctity of Marriage
I'm pretty sure the best way to handle this fallacy is through the power of numbers...and then logic.
So here we go:
This man has upheld the sanctity of marriage ... by cheating on his 1st and 2nd wives?
  • In 2009 the state of Florida recorded 79,000 divorces of 141,000 marriages--more than 50% in all
  • In 2004 a poster from the US census reported that "of men and women who married for the second or third time ... 91 percent were remarrying after being divorced"

The fact is, marriage has changed.  It is not the same as it was hundreds of years ago, and it's not the same as it was in the 60s.  People now have the power to marry who they are actually in love with, black and white couples can tie the knot, and divorce/adultery are not crimes punishable by stoning or damnation into Hell.  So why the stigma against gay marriage?  Gay couples have the potential to raise children just as well as heterosexual couples.
Neil Patrick Harris and his partner--with their new twins!!
Gay couples can be just as loving as heterosexual couples, it's all the same.  The only thing that changes is the pairing of genitalia, honest.

So please people, realize that this is a battle of civil and equal rights.  Remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight?  People don't walk around being blatantly racist anymore, and it's high time people start realizing that being homophobic is the exact same type of hurtful discrimination.  We are all human, and while it's true we all have different beliefs, if it's not hurting you, why fight it?  Everyone deserves the opportunity for happiness.

love, Sierra

I'm Harry Potter, Harry Harry Potter

Thissss is incredibly, indubitably (I love that word) late.  And it's going to be a poorly thought out, poorly written mind spew.  Nevertheless, I wanna write about it.

So basically the last week or so I went to a concert at the Holland Project.  Wait, no.  It was less than a week ago.  That's weird.  Time is going by oddly slow...

Anyways--I was already excited and intrigued, because there was a band playing that was called Harry and the Potters.  Plus it was a friggin 10 dollar concert, which is ridiculously expensive for the Holland Project.  So I was thinking it had better be pretty good!

This is how I plan to protest my money problem.
Well, you can stop holding your breath!  No worries.  The concert ended up being way better than I ever imagined.  First of all, I got to dance with strangers.  Lovely, nice strangers that took the initiative and wanted to dance with me and have fun!  No one ever does that!  I love it.

But I digress.  As an unexpected bonus!  I saw Harry Potter Puppet Pals.  In real life.  Maybe eight feet away.  Best.  Puppetshow.  Ever.  I was beyond excited when I realized that the famous Harry Potter puppets I'd seen before on YouTube were going to be at the same venue I was, providing entertainment.  So happy.  And they are so good!!!

ALSO, Harry and the Potters was immensely entertaining!  They danced in the crowd, had sing alongs and dance alongs, and they were super witty and funny!  I laughed so much.  Although I felt under-dressed, seeing as I forgot my wizard cloak at a concert full of HP nerds.  Ah well.

Oh..... hey guys.  I see you wore your white sheep costumes....
When it was all said and done, I was tired, losing my voice, and beyond happy.  One of the best nights of this entire summer.  Cheers to more in the future!

Tum-blah

I know that I'm super late in jumping on the bandwagon here, but I made a Tumblr.  Actually, I made a Tumblr about three weeks ago and I'm only telling y'all about it now.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I think of it.  One the one hand, it's kind of pointless and time consuming and involves a lot of reblogging and quasiporn.  On the other hand, it's an excellent way to find excellent pictures.  There are so many neat snapshots I've discovered thanks to Tumblr, anything from artsy to graphic to weird to cute or just plain funny.

And It Goes

Well.. the other day it occurred to me that I haven't blogged in a while.  Upon realizing that, I decided that I just wouldn't blog for the entire duration of July.  Take a break, relax like a cat, and return to blogging goodness in August.
Then I actually went to my website and realized I already had two posts for the month of July.  Because I have fake OCD, I decided that I can't do two and then break the rest of the month.  So here I am.  Writing a post.

But specifically, I'm here because I'm angry, and sad, and I want to write.  I don't know if you read the news and stay up to date on these things, maybe you do maybe you don't.  That doesn't matter.  What matters is Batman.  I'm serious.  Last night, Dark Knight Rises premiered across America, and millions of people went to the midnight screening to be amongst the first in the nation to watch the epic finale.  It was a hugely anticipated event, with tons of people looking forward to seeing the action packed film.  Everything should have been pure, worry free entertainment.

Unfortunately, life is not worry free.

Last night in Aurora, Colorado, a gunman burst through the exit doors of a crowded theatre filled with an eager Dark Knight audience.  He ignited tear gas and smoke bombs, and then proceeded to open fire upon everyone in the auditorium.

The worst part was that people were unaware of what was happening until it was too late.  The man cut in during a scene with explosions and gunfire, so people didn't even realize the movie was coming to life until they were surrounded by the blood of the people sitting around them.

Twelve people died.  58 more were wounded.  All were innocent movie goers, out with friends, family, and people they loved to watch a movie.

To watch a movie.  The scariest thing about this to me is how usual the act of going to a movie is.  I go to movies all the time!  I went to a movie just last week!  And never once did it occur to me that sitting in that dark room could be the last thing I ever did.

Certainly none of these people who died were thinking about that.

What is more horrifying is that single handedly, this man has cast an ominous shadow over going to the movies.  This man is making us challenge our views on what is safe, and what we should worry about.  This man is making people consider their own premature mortality.  And the fact that all survivors must now live with that truth is even more brutal and monstrous than perhaps the massacre itself.

In an ideal world, no one should have to consider the fact that they will die on their way to school or the grocery store.  In public spaces, the thought of danger or injury should be completely removed.

Of course, I realize that this is not an ideal world.  People die, kids bring guns to school and blow up innocent civilians, and these things can't be helped.  There is only so much we can prevent, and at some point we just have to accept that tragic, bloody horrible things happen and that's just how life works.  But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be shocked and outraged when these things do occur.

It all comes down to a lot of problems.  On the one hand, humans are intricate, twisted creatures and no one can ever be certain what will make us tick.  This gunman had no criminal record and was top of his neurological science classes.  He was incredibly bright.  So why he decided to dress up in full protective gear armed with tear gas and various assault weapons in order to take the lives of innocent people only to give himself up to the police, we may never know.

On the other hand, gun control laws could be changed.  I think it's to be expected that now this has happened, people will be clamoring for metal detectors and security checks to be installed at every theatre.  But that's not the root of the problem.  This incident could have happened at any location, any time.  Why it happened during a Batman movie, only the criminal can say.  But none of this would have happened if this man had not had access to a gun.

I don't directly blame the people who sold him the gun.  When he purchased his weapons, all the proper background checks were completed.  Like I said, this guy was clean.  Nothing on his slate other than a minor speeding ticket.  No one could have known that he would abuse his responsibility.  However, the fact remains that if he hadn't've had a gun he couldn't've killed people quite as quickly or as easily.

It's said that guns don't kill people, people kill people.  But that doesn't change the fact that if I'm angry enough to kill someone and I have a gun, BANG.  You're dead.  If I'm angry enough to kill someone and I don't have a gun, it would take much more time for me to kill you.  Which is why I strongly support the philosophy of restricting the accessibility and acceptance of firearms.

Although this kind of comes back to what I said earlier about not being able to prevent everything.  There is only so much we can reasonably do, and we have to accept that there was no reason to suspect this man of being unworthy of possessing a gun.  No one could have seen it coming.

So this leaves the last big problem.  That being how our society regards violence.

Our society is majorly desensitized to violence, and I will be the first to admit that bloody movies don't  faze me nearly as much as they probably should.  It's a truth that we can't hide from, but it's also a horribly depressing truth.  When six year old boys are blowing people up on Xbox and PG-13 movies now have more violence than ever before, it's plain to see that our society is not as averse to killing sprees as perhaps we should be.

Science and psychology has proven that when violence is seen from the eyes of a young child, it becomes ingrained in their heads, sometimes their very being and can lead to dire consequences.  Children are bundles of malleable brain mass and undeveloped cognitive reckoning, so quite literally what they see, they do.  Because they are new to the world, everything they see before them they adhere to.  At least until they are old enough to make decisions about the world for themselves.  However, it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks, and ancient memories and habits are prone to lingering in personalities.

So call it what you want.  A tragic model of human flaw, an example of faults within the second amendment, or a hidden streak of violence made obvious through the media and subconscious memories--whatever it is, it's appalling and completely sobering.  My heart and thoughts go out to anyone who has had the misfortune of losing someone they care about.   Here's to hoping that these occurrences will be as infrequent as possible in the future.

In the meantime, we need to see that there are a million grey areas in life.  We can never provide a complete answer for any of them, and we can really only throw out our best guesses.  Life is a mystery, and that's all we can ever hope to know for sure.  The best we can do is try our hardest to make life worth living--both for ourselves and for others.  Live to be remembered, live in a way that people around you respect and care for you, and live so that you respect and care for others.  Smile because it feels good, and aim for happiness.  And as tough as it may be to fight through the misery that life throws at us, that's all part of the ride.  Live for the little things that make the ride worth it.

love Sierra.
